The Kwankwasiyya Movement has demanded the immediate resignation of the INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan citing his loss of moral authority and public trust.
In a statement, signed by Dr Habibu Sale Mailemo, the Movement expressed concern over the Chairman’s encroachment on democratic principles and called for the immediate suspension of the voter revalidation exercise.
“The Chairman of INEC has lost the moral authority, public trust, and institutional credibility required to continue in office”, Mailemo said.
The movement also urged political actors to avoid weaponizing the judiciary and for civil society to defend Nigeria’s democratic space.
Mailemo also highlighted the risks to the 2027 general elections due to judicial inconsistencies and INEC’s questionable conduct, emphasizing the need for strong institutions and credible processes to protect Nigerians’ right to choose their leaders.
“We demand for the immediate resignation of the INEC Chairman, urgent suspension of the voter revalidation exercise, greater judicial discipline and intervention by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to address conflicting rulings”, he said.
“Nigeria’s future depends on strong institutions, credible processes, and the protection of the peoples right to freely choose their leaders. These must not be compromised”, he stressed.
